About The National School Breakfast and Lunch Program

The National School Breakfast and Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program operating in public schools under the administration of the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA).

The program provides economically priced and nutritionally balanced breakfasts and lunches to all children each school day. School districts that choose to take part in the program receive reimbursement and donated commodities for each meal they serve. In return, the district must serve meals that meet the meal pattern requirements, and the meals must be offered free or at a reduced price to eligible children.

School meals must meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend that no more than 30 percent of an individual’s calories come from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat. Regulations also establish a standard for school lunches to provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories. Decisions about the menu planning system to use and specific foods to serve and their preparation are made at the district level.
